One of the nation's best-known opera singers is seriously ill with cancer: Beverly Sills is at a New York City hospital, with her daughter at her side.In an e-mail this week to members of its board, the Metropolitan Opera said Sills is ''gravely ill.''
Sills was chairwoman of the Met until she resigned two years ago, citing health and family reasons. Her sparkling voice and her charming personality won over fans worldwide, and she became a powerhouse in the New York arts world.
